Most patients with this problem have low-grade prostate, urethral or seminal vesicle inflammation which requires no specific treatment and usually resolves spontaneously

Although there are many potential causes for this problem, it is often difficult to identify a clear cause. Those most often found are:

• low-grade seminal tract infection (± urinary tract infection);
• blood disorders (e.g. sickle cell disease, clotting disorders, anticoagulant and anti-platelet);
• recent urological surgery (e.g. cystoscopy, prostatic biopsy, vasectomy, vasectomy reversal);
• testicular or prostate cancer (very rare); and
• other causes, including less common infections (e,g. tuberculosis, schistosomiasis)

Blood in your semen can be:

• Bright red
• Pink
• Brown or reddish-brown

Sometimes there may be small lumps (clots) in the blood.

Depending on the cause, you may also have other symptoms like blood in your pee, pain when peeing or peeing more often than usual.

Common causes of blood in semen include:

• An infection, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or sexually transmitted infection (STI)
• A recent procedure or test, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a cystoscopy or a vasectomy
• A problem with the prostate, such as prostatitis or an enlarged prostate

Rarely, blood in semen can be a sign of cancer, such as prostate cancer.

Blood in semen, though, can be linked to cancer of the testicles, bladder, prostate, and other reproductive and urinary tract organs. Men especially older men with risk factors for cancer should be evaluated if they have blood in their semen. Untreated cancer is a life-threatening disease.
